Silverlight 5 support in Stimulsoft Reports.Silverlight.

Our company is pleased to announce support for Silverlight 5 in the reporting tool Stimulsoft Reports.Silverlight. It should be noted that for the convenience of users, our developers have divided it into 2 editions: with support for Silverlight 4 and with support for Silverlight 5. The reason of it is very simple - we want to preserve the ability of users to run the report generator under Silverlight 4, as well as under Silverlight 5.

Start using Stimulsoft Reports.Silverlight under Silverlight 5 right now! This feature was added in a weekly prerelease build of January, 27 2012. To download product builds, please visit the webpage Download on our website, the section Prerelease Builds.

Among the most requested enhancements was the possibility of printing Postscript vector printing in Silverlight 5, which reduces the size of print jobs, and improve the quality of text rendering. We would like to go into detail on it and give some recommendations in this regard.

In Silverlight 5 a new very important feature became available. This is vector printing. For working with this you need to have a printer that supports PostScript and drivers installed that support this PostScript.

We have tested a new vector printing in Silverlight 5. For testing we used various printers but in the example below we wrote about the printer HP LaserJet M1522nf.

Download the driver HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PostScript, the printer appeared in the list (see an image below)

After reading articles from Microsoft, it became clear that if, after installing, the printer name does not end at the "PS" it does not support PostScript, so you should look for another driver .

The first test we conducted opening the report SimpleList.mrt (3 pages. This report can be found in the standard delivery of the product Stimulsoft Reports.SIlverlight). See an image below.

The result shows that when printing this report in the standard mode (not vector printing) the file size was about ~129 MB, which is pretty much for three pages.

When printing the report in the vector mode the file size was 10MB, which is ~13 times less than if we use the previous method (standard printing).

The second test was with the report Anchors.mrt (71 pages. This report can be found in the standard delivery of the product Stimulsoft Reports.SIlverlight). See an image below.

From test results we see that in the vector printing mode the file size was 239MB, which is certainly too much, but, nevertheless, using the standard printing mode the file size reached ~3.86 GB in 62 pages. When it reached that amount the error occurred due to lack of memory and printing process failed. Respectively, according to results, the size of the result file was approximately about 16 times less.

Summarizing this information we can say that now, using Silverlight 5, it became possible to print big reports.

If you are using our Silverlight 5 assembly and the viewer does not print report applying PostScript please do the following:

1. Check if your printer does support PostScript.2. Is the proper driver installed for your printer (the default driver is always without support for PostScript).

It is very easy to check whether you have the correct driver is installed: the printer name ends in "PS" (for example: HP Universal Printing PS).

Perhaps, there are other specific printer settings. Contact the manufacturer of your printer for getting help.

Stimulsoft Reports Product Line. New Version 2011.3 Released.

We are happy to announce the release of the new version 2011.3 of our Stimulsoft Report product line. It was two months of very tough time. During this period we prepared multiple innovations for you to make your development easier and faster. The enhancements and updates elaborately described in this article.

New WebViewer Component

The WebViewer component has been updated so that was actually new. It has been completely rewritten from the brand new menu, and ending with supporting for themes. The new WebViewer was fully tested on all browsers and mobile platforms.

New Functions

We have added two new functions. These are ToWordsPt and ToCurrencyWordsPt. The ToWordsPt function converts the number to the value in words in Portuguese. The ToCurrencyWordsPt function converts the number to the value words specifying the currency.

Interactive Selection

The functionality of the Interaction property has been expanded in the new version. The Data Band has now the SelectionEnabled property. This property allows you to select a row in the data band in the report preview. It allows you to build dynamic master-detail reports with an unlimited nesting. See the examples in the DEMO application.

Cross-Tab in Silverlight

The new version offers support for the Cross-Tab component in Silverlight. Full compatibility in the Report Designer, in its engine - all report data are quickly and easily handled. Using the report generator in Silverlight environment has become more convenient.

Conditions in Series Labels

Now you can add Conditions to Series Labels of the Chart component. With the new conditions you can affect the formatting of chart labels. This gives you an unlimited ability of formatting and attracting users' attention to design charts.

Quick Button for Image

To speed up work with the Image components, we have added to it the Quick Button. This Quick Button allows you to quickly select the data column from which images will be taken for the component.

Importing Tools Improved

Since the last release we have been revised all importing utilities and dramatically improved their performance. Much work has been done over the import utility for Active Reports, Crystal Reports, and Microsoft Reporting Services. We believe that the new importing tools will accelerate the converting reports process from these products. The latest versions of the tools can be found in the section Downloads -> Importing Tools of our site.

Printing via HTML

There is an opportunity in the product to print using HTML for the WebViewerFx component of the product Reports.Web and Reports.Ultimate. Print via HTML by means of a browser, and the fonts are printed in a vector format, allowing to get rid of a large amount of data and text blurring. It should be borne in mind that when you print using HTML the browser settings are used.

Improved Globalization Editor

The new version of the Globalization Editor adds two new functions "Get culture" and "Set culture." The "Get culture" function allows you to fill in the current culture of the report with values from the report. The "Set culture" function allows you to apply a customized culture directly into the current account during the report designing.

Multilingual Report Checker

Properties description and the report checker is now localized in German in Silverlight, WPF and NET products. The properties description and the report checker is now localized in Russian in Silverlight. The utility Report Checker now generates messages in German. What makes our German-speaking users be able to get, with great pleasure and comfort, error messages and ways of solving them in German. In addition, the utility in the Silverlight platform knows three languages and is able to produce detailed messages, suggestions to change a report in English, Russian and German.

Interaction in Silverlight

The report engine for the Silverlight platform in the Net mode does not support the Interaction property. Starting with the new version we have added full support for this property. We hope that this innovation will make your report more user-friendly.

Print in Silverlight

In recent years, many changes were made to fix a printing method. Since the release of 2011.2 we fixed a problem with truncation of the right side of the page, also fixed some problems with printing primitives. Also, according to users' requests, the Print method was moved to the StiReport class and, to print a report, you do not need to always make it be displayed in the viewer and waste extra resources, simply call the Print method.

Expressions in Chart Filters

In the new version of the report generator you may specify complex filtering for each series of the Chart component. You can now use the expression in the chart filters. Also filtering by fields that are not in the chart and also by related fields, but not only by an argument or a value, as it was previously, became available.

Borders, Locations and Styles

The AllowUserBorderSidesFromLocation property is added to the report style. If it is set to true, then depending on the location of the component in the band with a style set, the displayed border of this component is changed. For example, if it is located in the upper left corner of the band, then, accordingly, it sets the left and the upper border. If it is put in the center and does not border any of the band edges, the boundaries of the component are reset. If it is located on the bottom edge, then the lower border is set. If the component takes the entire band space, then it outlines all four borders. This feature allows you to build very complex styles that allow you to avoid unnecessary complication of the report.

Business Objects in Wizards

All report wizards now support for Business Objects. Previously, it was possible to select only the Data Source. The emergence of such a feature allows you to use Business Objects fully and equally with the Data Sources.

Business Objects in Silverlight

The newest version of the Silverlight reporting tool supports Business Objects filtering and sorting. It is now possible to create reports using not only the Data Source but also Business Objects.

WebViewer and Parameters

The StiWebViewer component now has a new panel of variables for the query parameters from the user. It has a user-friendly interface that allows the user to easily enter complex parameters such as lists, editable lists with changeable number of elements, ranges of data types. For the type "date" we created a comfortable DatePicker (calendar), whereby there is no need to enter the date manually. When sending data from a panel of variables or resetting them to the initial values, changes in the report are applied without reloading the page. Also, a new panel of variables is made in accordance with the new WebViewer design.

Hierarchical Reports and Business Objects

Business Objects now become available for the hierarchical band. Previously, Business Objects in a hierarchical band were not available. In the new version we worked on this shortcoming and removed it. Now, for any hierarchical band any Business Objects can be applied. This option allows you to make your reports more visually literate and comfortable to use. We further plan to add new features to our product.

Stimulsoft Reports.Fx Product Line Version 2011.3 Released.

We are happy to announce the release the Stimulsoft Reports.Fx product line version 2011.3. Stimulsoft Reports.Fx product line includes the products Stimulsoft Reports.Fx for Flex, Stimulsoft Reports.Fx for PHP, Stimulsoft Reports.Fx for Java. In this version we have widened the list of supported exports and added the HTML format. We also added new converting functions, updated the utility Report Checker, included new sections and articles to the documentation. Export to HTML, now in FX

In the new version of Reports.Fx you can find a new format for exporting rendered reports. This is the HTML format. The new export is available in the report viewer, the menu Save, and out of the developer's API. Before exporting a report to the HTML format you may set the export options.

Printing via HTML

We have added a new ability to print reports using HTML. This option is available for the entire Reports.Fx line. Earlier, due to limitations of the technology, reports were printed as images from the Flash viewer. This had its drawbacks such as large size of data sent to the printer, some text blurring on the printed page. New functionality is included to get rid of these disadvantages. Printing via HTML goes by means of a web browser, and fonts are printed in a vector format. Remember that printing is carried out by means of a browser, and may depend on its printing settings (headers, footers, margins, printing the background and images). All these options can be changed in your browser.

New Functions

The functions for converting numbers, currency, date, and time to a string in words are now available in the new version. These functions allow you to convert numeric values to the string in words in the selected national language. We have added support for the following languages: English, French, Russian, Polish, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Thai, and others. This will make your reports easier to read, and also adds additional protection from possible corrections of documents in the case, if these values were output only as numbers.

The utility Report Checker now generates messages in three languages, English, German and Russian. This improvement makes our Russian and German speaking users be able to get, with great pleasure and comfort, error messages and ways of solving them in Russian and German.

Updated documentation

Documentation on the product underwent a series of changes. We added articles to the section Data with detailed description of the key features and principles of connecting data in the report. We included description of the export to HTML mode, indicating export settings and parameters. You can also find step by step instructions how to create basic reports.

Just to remind you that WebViewer is used to display reports in the web page. But do not be afraid of innovations. These updates do not force you to re-learn and get used to the new look. A wide choice for fans of diversity.Multilevel menu is available when saving a report while exporting that will allow getting rid of its unwieldiness on the screen and logically group items of export. The new menu became animated. This added one extra reason to enjoy work.Finally a new panel of variables appeared. What is it? If a user creates report variables which, before report rendering, should be requested from the user, the pane appears in the viewer, which displays the data variables, and requires the input values. You should enter data and click send. The report is re-rendered and uses values of variables.

In contrast to the old bar, where you have had only text input variables, in the new one it has become possible to select a date using the visual calendar; drop-down menus and lists, and many more other features. Also, the new panel has a visual appearance of the selected WebViewer theme.We also modified the WebViewer component itself. We added a new nice appearance. The WebViewer items now have frames, shadows and borders.Updated WebViewer is easy to handle. You do not have to install a special Internet browser or any extensions to get it work. Our WebViewer works in any web browser under any operating system. Also, our experts have considered Stimulsoft today's popular trend of working with web applications in mobile browsers. So now you can access the WebViewer, using pads or any other mobile devices.So now, already familiar, well-known and comfortable viewer, brought to you in a new, more favorable to-use form. Report Checker for Web

The desktop versions of our product come with a unique module for testing reports - Report Checker. It is available either as a separate utility or as an integrated tool in the report designer. Now you can check your reports for errors in Web applications. Since version 2011.2 the Report Checker is available for report designers Designer.Web and Designer.Silverlight. This utility not only checks the report for errors, but also describes in detail the reason or their appearance, and offers suggestions to correct them by pressing a single button.

Save a Copy

A new option to save a copy of any item in the data dictionary is added. A button to save a copy is available in the edit item dialog. This feature will significantly speed up the process of creating new elements in the data dictionary. On the current moment, the feature is available in the WinForms report designer.

Filters and Queries

In version 2011.1, as well as in all previous versions, filtration was processed mostly by the report generator. In the new version, users choose themselves how to filter - using the report generator or using an SQL query. If you are using the SQL query, report generator will make changes of the SQL query text using a special algorithm, based on the specified filtration options. Filtration options are specified in the data band. This new feature can be used to optimize the exchange of data between the application and database.

New Importing Tool

Despite the fact that Stimulsoft Reports understands a lot of third-party file formats, we decided not to stop on it. A new one is added into the importing utilities list - imports from the Report Sharp-Shooter format. This tool will help you to get started with Stimulsoft Reports much quicker. The utility supports the main elements of the product.

Sorting and Filtration of Business Objects

Sorting and filtration is now possible for business objects! You can setup sorting and filtration using a standard editing dialog of the Data band. Configuration interface is exactly the same as for data sources.

Collapsing Hierarchical Reports

Earlier interactive collapsing was only available for groups and master-detail reports. Now you can expand and collapse hierarchical bands. All that is necessary is to change one option of a band. Using collapsing function it is possible to save the user reports from the contemplation of redundant information in the report and, at the same time, provide this information only if needed.

The Installer utility is delivered as a part of Stimulsoft Reports pack. This utility helps you to install or remove Stimulsoft Reports assemblies in GAC. Multiple Monitors

Our company can claim that all our applications are fully adapted to work on two or more monitors. At the same time, you can open several applications and display them on different monitors. The new tool Options Helper is available in this release. This tool helps to understand many options of the report generator and create a list of changed parameters. This list can be loaded in your program to quickly initialize the report generator properties. Also, the list can be used for the report designer. For this purpose it is enough to place it in the same folder as the report designer.

Parameters in Web

In previous versions of our products we have added support for new parameters in the desktop and Silverlight applications. Now the parameters are supported in Reports.Web. New parameters can be changed in Designer.Web. They can be used using WebViewer.Fx. Using parameters greatly expands using reports and their interactivity. It supports not only simple values but ranges of values and values lists.

Border.Topmost Porperty

In version 2011.2 the report developers have a new feature to build reports - the Border.Topmost property. If to enable it for the border, the border side will always be drawn on the top of components. This feature expands the visual abilities of reports. It is also like a workaround for some limitations in designing reports.

Page Order

Now you can change the order of the pages in the report designer for Web. It is as easy there as in the desktop report designer. This can be done using the context menu of the page tab.

In the previous version of the report designer for Web, expressions editor when globalizing reports are not delivered. In the new version we have eliminated this annoying omission. Now you can fully globalize your reports using the report editor for Web, without using the desktop version of the report designer.

Printing to PDF File from WebViewerFx

We have added support for printing into the Adobe PDF file to enhance printing from the Web application that uses the WebViewerFx component. If you need to print the report using the PDF file, you must set the Print to PDF option in the print dialog of the report. Printing to a PDF file allows you to send perfectly accurate copy of the report to the printer.

Optimization

We have done a great work of optimizing the report designer when working with very large reports. Optimization was done in WPF, WinForms and Silverlight versions of the report designer. The performance of many dialog boxes for editing items is greatly increased. We have reduced delays in carrying out of many operations in the report, optimized many algorithms.

Interacting with Charts

The new version of our products comes with a new chart builder engine. We completely redesigned it. All this was done to make the charts in our reports more interactive. Now you can interact with elements of the diagrams on report pages in full force, as well as with other components. Applying Style to Chart

RefCursor as a parameter is now supported in the Oracle ODP Provider. In order to use RefCursor as a parameter, select the Stored Procedure type of the query, add a parameter with the RefCursor type and then you can use a query in the report. We are glad to announce the next this year release of Stimulsoft Reports.Fx product line version 2011.2. This line includes the products Stimulsoft Reports.Fx for Flex, Stimulsoft Reports.Fx for PHP, Stimulsoft Reports.Fx for Java. In this version we have added support for parameters, export to Word 2007 and CSV format, globalization, new functions etc. Now it is possible to check reports on errors and fix them quickly. Parameters

To extend the functionality of reports in the new version, we have significantly improved the work with the RequestFromUser parameter of variables. Now, using this option, the process for data request from a user can be greatly expanded. The user can specify not only simple values, but also lists of values and value ranges. In addition, we have significantly expanded the functionality of the variables that are used as parameters. You can add lists of values for the subsequent selection by the user; specify the date and time separately; prohibit the direct editing of parameters by the used; and many more other things. We also added a new button to the toolbar, which allows you to hide or show the parameters panel.

Export to Word 2007

Export to Word 2007 is now available in Stimulsoft Reports.Fx. With this export you can create in the viewer a Word 2007 file on the base of a rendered report. You can start the export process from the Save menu of the report viewer. Before exporting reports, you can configure basic settings with the export settings dialog.

Report Checker

A unique opportunity to test the report for errors is integrated into our product. Now, if you have problems with displaying or rendering reports, you can see a list of errors with detailed information of the problem. In addition, the report generator will offer solutions for the problem, if it is possible to be done automatically. The Report Checker is available from the main menu or from the bottom panel of the report designer.

Cross Reports

Double Pass

Now you can create reports in two passes. Control of number of passes is executed using the NumberOfPass report property. Using two passes allows making, in the first pass, the calculation of important parameters that can be used in the second pass, for calculations or displaying.

In order to reduce the number of properties in the Properties panel, you can configure it. There are three configuration modes: Basic, Standard and Professional.     Radar chart can be used to show the comparative values in time or by category.
This type of charts show the difference in values relative to a central point. For each data point the appropriate marker can be applied.

    A bubble chart is a variety of scatter charts. It compares three different numerical parameters.

Stimulsoft Reports.Fx Product Line: Export to CSV is Added.

CSV (Comma Separated Values) is a text format that is used to represent table data.
Each string of the file is one row of the table. The values of each column are separated by the delimiter that
depends on regional settings. The values that contain reserved characters (such as a comma or a new string) are
framed with the double quotes ( ") symbol; if double quotes are found in the value they are represented as two
double quotes in the file.

In Stimulsoft Reports.Fx for Java report generation is no longer a problem. Thanks to the designers available (a fully-featured standalone
report designer (created using Adobe AIR technology), the report designer for launching in a browser window (web component) and
from a Java application (swt component)). Using the report designer it becomes possible to perform full administration
report directly in the browser window, or from your application. The Ribbon user interface is chosen as a basic UI
because it is used in many up-to-date applications. So you do not need to get used to the new interface go on creating reports immediately. The designer supports all
basic functions: visual reports designing, copy/paste, drag and drop, zoom and great many other features. Tooltips with explanatory text for almost all interface items

As we promised in one of the news in the end of the last year, our team has prepared for you some of pleasant surprises.
The first surprise is the announcement of a coming up new software product release Stimulsoft Reports.Fx for Java.

Stimulsoft Reports.Fx for Java is a client-server application. On the server side a Java application (works with various databases,
controls loading and saving reports on the server side) that controls reports rendering is run.
On the client side works the Adobe Flash technology, which provides a universal mechanism for generation of reports on
any client. The product has an intuitive and fully functional interface, based on the Ribbon UI. Also this product will contain the
standalone report designer, used to run the software on a local PC.

In a new prerelease build we are pleased to announce the implementation of a new component: Cross-Tab.
The Cross table is a special component that is used to process, group and summarize data from the data source. The result
is represented as a table. The Cross table can be placed both directly on a page or on a Data band. If a table that is created
as a result of a cross table rendering does not fit in the one page, then can be printed on some pages. The component has many
properties and settings.

We are glad to announce the current year first release of Stimulsoft Reports version 2011.1.
Four months passed since the last release and now we would like to share with you all the features and
improvements our development team has prepared. Enormously hard work has been done to make the reporting
tool more robust, powerful and user-friendly. Great many new functions, advanced conditions, wizards,
components, converting utilities are implemented in this release through all the report generators included
into this software product.

Styles in Highlight Condition

Now, the selected style is stored in the condition and, when changing style parameters, design parameters
and conditions are automatically changed. Earlier, style selection in the condition led to copying its
parameters into the parameters of conditions. Also, it is worth to say that now, when using the style in
the condition, the style itself is applied but not parameters of appearance set in the condition and copied
from the style. The style will be applied to the component, if the condition is triggered.

Applying Parameters in Styles

In the new version of the condition editor, it is possible to specify which parameters of appearance to
use, and which not to use. For example, it allows changing only the color of a displayed text when the condition
is triggered or make the font italic and at the same time change the background color.

Parameters

To extend the functionality of the reports, in the new version, we have essentially improved the RequestFromUser
option for the variables. Now, using this option, the process of data request from the user can be greatly extended.
It is possible to request not only simple values but nullable values, lists of values and value ranges. Also, we
significantly expanded the functionality of variables that are used as parameters - opportunities to add value
lists for subsequent selection, request date and time separately, to prohibit the direct editing of user parameters
and many more others were implemented. In addition, the report viewer has a new button that hides or displays the
Settings panel. One can now manage the process of report rendering with parameters using the RequestParameters
property of a report. This property affects whether to render a report for the first time automatically with the
default parameters of values or one need to specify the parameters first and then update the report. Also, we added
the ParametersOrientation property. With help of this property it is possible to indicate where the parameters panel
should be placed - on the top or left edge of the viewer.

Condition - Data Bar

We have added a new Data Bar condition type to increase the quality of visual presentation of information in our
products. When using this condition, the reporting tool analyses all values in the specified data column and the
current value that is output in the component. This information is used to display the color bands in the output
component. This type of condition is very convenient to display the dynamics of changing data in the report. The
Data Bar can only be used in text components.

Condition - Color Scale

Another new type of conditions is the Color Scale. It is designed to display the dynamics of changing data.
The dynamics is displayed by changing the background color of the component. The color set for the minimum
values are interpolated to the color, which is set for the maximum values, depending on the size of the displayed
values in the component. This condition can only be used for text components.

Condition - Icons Set

Icon Set is a new type of condition to display graphical information in the text component. When using this
condition, the report generator analyzes the values in this column. All the data got during analysis are divided
into ranges. Each range has its own icon. Depending on what, the range is a value that is generated for this
component is selected and displays an icon. The condition is perfect for graphic reflection of the trends, the
criteria of growth and decline, performance of various indicators. This condition can be used only for text
components.

New Utilities for Converting Reports

In the new release four new tools for converting reports that are created in other products to the Stimulsoft
Reports format are added. These are import utilities from RDL, Active Reports, XtraReports, and FastReport.Net.
We believe that these tools will simplify migration of reports from other formats.

New Types of Bar-codes

First, we added a new two-dimensional bar code - QRCode. This barcode is gaining increasing popularity in recent
years. It is used in many applications, particularly in mobile applications. Second, we added two one-dimensional
bar-codes - Code128Auto and EAN128Auto. These two bar-codes scan the code and can automatically switch their modifications
to a, b or c.

According to numerous requests from our users we have added a separate type of connection for data connection to the MS
Access database. A new type of connection requests only data needed for MS Access.

Connecting to EffiProz Data

The new version of our product supports connection to EffiProz databases. The new connection is available in the NET,
WPF, and Web versions of the report designer. The database is optimized for local storage of information. Also, it

Wizard for Placing Components

To simplify the placement of components in a band, we have added a special wizard for placement. If, when dragging a component
in a band, its border crosses the band border, then one will be prompted to automatically dock the component to the left or
right side of the band. The size of components already placed in the band will be taken into account.

Wizard for Replacing Components

If to drag any field from the data dictionary to an existing component in a page, a replacement component wizard will be invoked.
It offers options for adding or replacing the content of an existing component on data from the data dictionary.

New Functions

In the new version we have added great many new functions. The first pack is Left, Mid, and Right functions. The Left function
returns a specified amount of symbols from the beginning of the string. The Mid function returns a specified amount of symbols
from the specified position in the string. The Right function returns a specified amount of symbols from the end of the string.
The second pack is ToWordsEs and ToCurrencyWordsEs. The first function returns the amount of words in Spanish. The second returns
the amount of words (currency option) in Spanish. In addition, it is worth noting that the ToCurrencyWordsEs function supports MXN
(Mexican peso) currency. The third pack is Persian and Arabic. The Persian function returns the number, written in Persian numerals.
The function returns the number written in Arabic numerals. It is worth mentioning that a version for Silverlight, now also supports
the Roman function. The fourth pack is the GetAnchorPageNumberThrough function. It extends the GetAnchorPageNumber function and
returns continuous number of the page. And the fifth pack is the Totals.SumNullable function. It returns null, if all values passed

The previous version of the report designer for Silverlight, did not provide the ability to create reports using the Report Wizards.

Styles in Dialogs

Until that time, applying styles for controls was not possible. We have decided to eliminate this shortage. All controls now have the
ComponentStyle property which is used for indicating the style. Also a style for dialogs is added - DialogStyle. New styles can be
created in the editor style.

Rotating Charts in Report

Sometimes it is needed to rotate the chart on a report page on 90 degrees or 180 degrees. In order to achieve this result we added
the Rotation property. The property allows rotating a chart on 90 degrees clockwise or anticlockwise; rotating a chart on 180 degrees;
flip chart either horizontally or vertically.

The Text in Cells Component in Stimulsoft Reports.Silverlight and Report Designer for Web

Business Objects and Cross-Tab Component

Earlier, the Cross-Tab component could use data only from the data source. Now you can select data including the category
of Business Objects. There is no difference from using data from Business Objects in the Cross-Tab editor in compare with
using data from the Data Sources. In next releases of our products we plan to fully support using of Business Objects in
reports.

Report Checker and the Messages Panel

The Report Checker completely superseded the messages panel from the report designer. The button to launch the Report
Checker is placed on the Status Bar of the report designer, where the Message Bar was earlier located. If, while report
rendering, any errors have been found, then the Report Checker will notify about this with a tooltip, clicking on which
you can open the Report Checker and learn more about the problem. The Report Checker displays not only errors but shows
warnings about the potential problems in the report. It also gives various recommendations to change the report. If, when
rendering a report, any messages from the report engine will be received, they will also be displayed with the Report Checker.

Window 7 Support

We have expanded support of Windows 7 in our products. A progress animation while loading and saving reports in the Windows
taskbar is added. Animation is implemented to the report viewer window and the window of the report designer. Enhancement is
available in WinForms and WPF versions. In the WPF version we added Windows 7 compatible dialogs for opening and saving files.
For WinForms version of our product preview thumbnail buttons are added. They are used for operations with report files in the
report designer and operations for saving, loading and printing reports in the report viewer.

Interactivity in Silverlight Report Viewer

The client-server version of the report viewer for Silverlight fully supports the Interaction property of report components.
The property provides opportunity for sorting, grouping, navigation and reports detailing in a report viewer window.

XBAP Mode for Viewing Reports in WPF

A new report viewer is available in the WPF version of our product. This special version of WPF viewer designed to

The Sub-Report is a report component that can be placed on a band, page, panel or any other component that can be a container for the sub-report.
When placing this component, the reporting tool will add a sub-page into the report and bind it with the Sub-Report. When rendering a report,
the reporting tool will build all sub-reports and place them in this container. A report that has any structure can be created on the sub-page.
Also the Sub-Report component can be placed on the sub-page, so the sub-page of the second level will be created. In other words it is
possible to create complex hierarchy in a report.

This utility allows you to quickly convert your .rdl or .rdlc document to the .mrt format of our report generator. All you need is to specify the path where your .rdl file is located (the RDl Template field)
and define the folder where the file should be saved to as .mrt file (the Stimulsoft Reports Template field). Then click Convert. The file is converted! Open the report designer and continue editing the document.
RDL (Report Definition Language) is an XML application used with Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services.

It is possible to download this utility as well as other importing tools Import.CrystalReports and Import.Rtf on our website at the Tools section.

All you need is to specify the path to the .rtf document in the RichTextFile field, and then, in the Stimulsoft Reports

Royal TPG Post KIX 4-State barcode can now be used in Stimulsoft Reports

We are working on extending the amount of bar-codes which can be used in our products. Royal TPG Post KIX 4-State barcode is the next one we support in
Stimulsoft Reports product line. This symbology is used by Royal Dutch TPG Post (Netherlands) for Postal code and automatic mail sorting. It provides
information about the address of the receiver. This symbology encodes alpha-numeric characters (0-9, A-Z). The barcode is also known as Royal TNT Post
Kix, Dutch KIX 4-State Barcode, Kix Barcode, TPG KIX, Klantenindex Barcode, TPGPOST KIX.

Stimulsoft Reporting – Styles for Reports

Styles are arguably the most important feature in Stimulsoft reporting. Why? Because element of a report has a style attached.
The definition of a style is two-fold. First, you can think of a style as a set of pre-defined formatting instructions that you can
use repeatedly throughout all reports in your application. Let's say each report header must be centered, uppercase, bold, and a
slightly larger font size. Each time you need to apply formatting to the heading, you have to go through the entire process to get
the text the way you want it. If you store the formatting commands in a style, you can apply that style any time you need it without
having to do all of the reformatting.

Possibly more important however is that styles are used to "tag" or identify parts of a report. An example of this is whether text is of data
type Numeric, a String, a DateTime, or an Expression. Styles can be created for complex controls such as Charts and Cross-Tab. These are all examples of styles in Stimulsoft reports.

If you're concerned about whether or not you need to learn styles, we can put it rather simply: you do. Styles allow for quick formatting modifications throughout the report and can be tied into columns or even particular data values to make working with conditional formatting much easier.

There are several reasons for using styles in a report:

• Consistency — when you use styles to format your report, each section is formatted the same and therefore, provides a professional, clean-looking report.
Moreover, these styles definitions can be shared among all reports in your application to given each report a consistent look and feel.

• Easier to Modify — If you use styles in your report consistently, you only need to update a given style once if you want to change the characteristics of all text formatted in that style.

• Efficiency — you can create a style once, and then apply it to any report without having to format each report individually.

• Make sure that you have the style toolbar visible by going to View -> Toolbars -> Style;

• Once you have the style toolbar visible in your report designer click on the Style Designer Icon;

• In the style designer, click on Add Style and select Component;

• Type the name as Report header;

• Type the description as This style will be applied to all report headers;

• Select the text brush color to any color of your choice as per user requirements;

• Select Brush of the background of the text as your choice, I selected glass to make it look cool;

Stimulsoft reporting provides a tool that checks your reports for problems which you may miss. This tool
is unique to Stimulsoft and can be a very helpful feature for quality control. Users can run checks for warnings,
compilation errors, recommendations and even advice. In many cases the report checker can show you a preview of
the report with the problem area highlighted and also provides ways to fix the issues in the report definition file.

In this tutorial I will show you how to create shipping label report in Stimulsoft Reports.Wpf and check it
in Report Checker.Wpf and fix the errors, warnings and recommendations.

The data for this sample report will come from the
Northwind sample database provided by Microsoft.

The demo version of Stimulsoft reporting tools can be downloaded from the website
http://stimulsoft.com/ReportsNetDownloads.aspx.

Steps are required in order to create a simple report:

1. Add a connection to your report

2. Add required data sources to report

3. Add Orders to the report

4. Fix report in Report Checker

1. Add a data source to your report

• Open Stimulsoft Reports.Wpf Designer from start menu, the WPF designer is big improvement of the windows forms designer and looks very similar to the office 2010 interface;

• Select Dictionary Tab in the right pane;

• Select New Item and click on New Connection;

• The new connection wizard gives you various options for different types of connections, namely SQL connection, OleDB connection, XML data and ODBC connection;

• Select SQL connection for this tutorial;

• Give the connection any name that represents the database. For our example I will name it Northwind;

• Click on Build button to create a connection string or paste it into the connection string text area. You can also create your own connection string using instructions given on http://www.connectionstrings.com

• Click on the test button to make sure that the connection string works.

2. Add required data sources to report

• Right-click on the newly created Northwind connection and select New Data Source;

• Select Northwind and click OK;

• Stimulsoft reports will display all data objects that are available for reporting;

• For our example we will selected Orders and Order details tables and click OK;

• Orders and Order Details tables as now available under Northwind connection.

3. Add Orders to the report

• Find Data Band in Toolbox on Left side of report designer;

• Drag and drop the data band from toolbox into the report to create a new data band. When prompted for data source selection just click ok;

• Move your mouse to top right corner of data and to see various small buttons, click on the left most to select data source;

• Select orders to assign orders as the data source of the data band;

• Drap and Drop Text object into the Header to display Orders header;

• We will use HTML formatting to display Orders in Bold. Type <B>Orders</B> to display it in Bold;

• Drag and Drop Order Date, Ship Name, Ship Address, Ship City, Region, Country and Postal Code to the Data Band;

• This report will help users print shipping labels so we will need to a bar code also;

• Drag and Drop the bar code object into the data band;

• Right click on the barcode and select properties;

• Find the Code Property and click on … button on right most corner of the property;

• Drag and Drop the Order.Freight property into the text edit, this tells the report designer to generate barcodes based on value of freight;

• Click on the preview tab to see how the report looks with real data;

• Save the file as Order.mrt as a known location.

4. Fix report in Report Checker

• Open report checker from start menu;

• Click on the Open button and browse to Orders.mtr and click on Open;

• Report Checker will scan Order.mrt and display its findings;

• We can see that there are 2 warnings;

• The first warning shows as one of the components in the report is outside the page;

• To view which component is outside the page, simple move your move over to the magnifying glass to see a preview;

• We can clearly see that the bar code is highlighted in Red and is outside the page;

• I don’t need to go back to the report designer to fix, I can simply click on Move to page or To Print Area to fix this;

• Now I can go back to the report designer to see that the bar code has been moved inside the margin;

• The second warning shows that AllowHtmlTags property is set to False;

• Move your move over the magnifying glass to see that Orders header is highlighted;

• To fix this error simply click on the On button;

• When we go back to report designer we can see that the ugly <B> tags are gone and Orders text is displayed in bold;

• Now we can go to preview tab to see the final result.

to create an ADO.NET data model, register entities as business objects with Stimulsoft report designer and design a
tabular report and save the report definition file to run the newly created report.

• Make sure you are targeting .NET Framework version 3.5 SP1 or higher

• Right-click on project name in Solution Explorer

• Select Add and then select New Item

• Select ADO.NET Entity Date Model

• Type the name of the model file, for this tutorial it is going to be Northwind.edmx

• Click on Add button

2. Generate Entity Model for Northwind database

• Select Generate from database and click Next

• Choose the connection string for Northwind or build our own connection string using instructions given on http://www.connectionstrings.com

• Select all database objects that you want to report on. For this tutorial we are going to select only the tables.

• Type the namespace of the ADO.NET entity model as NorthwindModel or any other namespace or our choice and click on Finish.

• Visual studio will now scan the database schema and generate all required Entity model classes and definitions.

• Browse the Entity model to see various entities that are created.

• We will be using Customers entity to list all customers in our report.

3. Register Business Objects with Report Desinger

• Create a new form in your project

• Make sure you have added the reference to required Stimulsoft Reports.Net dlls by right-clicking on the project and selecting add reference.

• Add a button called Design Report and another button called Run Report.

• Create an event handler for the Design Report button.

• Add some code to get a list of customers and list of orders from those customers using Northwind entity model (For simplicity
we are getting list of all customers, in practice you would be using LINQ to form a query by following tutorials provided
Microsoft at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb738636.aspx )

• The Entity Data Model shows that Customers has a property classes Orders, it also shows there are 1 to many relationship
between customers and orders.

• Create a new StiReport object and load the report definition from “C:\MyReport.mrt” if the file exists (For this tutorial
we have fixed the location of report file for simplicity)

• Register the list of customers and list of orders with the report object.

• Stimulsoft report designer scans the definition of customer and determines that it has child orders, this will be very
helpful while designing the report.

• Call the Design function of the report object to launch the designer.

• Expand Northwind to see customers and orders

• Expand Customers to see all the fields that belong to customers

• Expand Orders to see all the fields that belong to orders

5. Associate Customers to child orders

• In order to associate Customer to their child orders we need to show orders under customers

• Right click on Customers and select New Business Object

• Select Child of Business Object

• Select Orders from the list of children of Customers

• Make any changes alias of orders or to columns inside Orders or add new calculated columns

• Click Ok to continue

6. Add Master and Detail tables to report layout

• Drag Customers and drop into the report layout to add customers table to the design

• Select all the fields that you want to show in the report

• Drag Orders under customers and drop into the report layout to add orders table to the design

• Select all the fields that you want to show in the report

• Report designer automatically shows details grouped by master

• Change background color of Customers to differentiate it from details

• Click on Preview tab to see the report preview

• Click on Save Report icon save to C:\MyReport.mrt

• Close the report designer

7. Run new report using Business Objects

• Add a event handler for Run Report button

• Create new StiReport object and load the report definition from “C:\MyReport.mrt”

• Drag and Drop StiWebDesinger1 from the toolbox to your webpage

2) Show Designer.Web on Edit button click

• Drag and Drop a button Standard ASP.NET button onto the page and type the text as “Edit Report”

• Add an event handler for the edit button and add the following line to show the Designer.Web

• Click to see the final report design

• Please remember to disable the popup blocker for the localhost

• Click on the preview tab and select Preview as HTML

• The report preview will open in a popup window

• Select any location on the local drive to store the report
